Woodruff defender Meredith back with a vengeance

Woodruff’s journey through the 2A playoffs is taking a route similar to last season.

Once again, a first-round victory against Crescent has set up a rematch with Batesburg-Leesville.

But for Wolverines linebacker Braelen Meredith, the road is new.

A right knee injury ended the 5-foot-11, 200-pounder’s season prior to the opening game last year, preventing him from coming along for the ride.

The blow was huge, not just for Meredith, as he led the Wolverines with 127 tackles and had another 27 for loss during his sophomore season.

“It was the last practice, and I even think the last drill, of two-a-days,” Meredith said of the injury. “I didn’t think it would ever happen to me. It will make you humble. It’s one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I just had to cheer the team on and wasn’t able to contribute.”

“When I told the coaches (he was out for the year), it was dead silence,” Woodruff coach Brian Lane said. “Then when I told our kids, you would have thought it was a funeral. I would equate that to losing (quarterback) Jake Lambert on offense. It was that huge. You immediately take 140 tackles and throw them out the window.”

This season, though, Meredith has bounced back strong.

He leads the team with 129 tackles, 18 for loss, five quarterback hurries and a sack.

Meredith’s teammates say having their leader back in the fold has paid dividends.

“We have guys up front on the defensive line who have gotten better,” linebacker Jake Robinson said. “With Braelen at linebacker, everybody does their assignments.”

“It challenges everybody to go harder and make the play,” defensive back Devear Martin said. “There’s a lot of confidence knowing there is someone in the middle who will make the play all the time.”

Strong safety Clarence Gaffney feels Meredith’s presence can lead the team toward its ultimate goal.

“He’s helping out a lot,” Gaffney said. “He’s filling his position and hopefully will help us to a state title.”

Lane said Meredith appears to have fully recovered from the injury.

“He’s not tentative at all and has gotten back in the swing of things,” Lane said. “He’s the catalyst of our defense and people feed off his energy.”

“I wanted to come back and help our defense get better,” Meredith said. “Hopefully, I can lead the team to a state title.”

Lambert Receives Offer From Air Force

By KEVIN MELTON
For the Herald-Journal

Woodruff quarterback Jake Lambert received a scholarship offer Wednesday from Air Force.

Lambert, the Wolverines’ all-time leading passer, is also being recruited by South Carolina, Georgia Tech, The Citadel, Elon, Furman, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian. None have made offers. Lambert passed for 34 touchdowns and 3,316 yards last season.

The rising senior said he was notified of the offer by his head coach, Brian Lane.

“I got the offer today around lunchtime,” Lambert said. “I was anxious to see if I was going to get any offers this year. I was just happy to get it, especially from a good school like Air Force. I’m interested in them now that they have made the offer.”

Lane said the offer is a testament to his quarterback’s hard work.

“It’s relieved some pressure off of (Jake) to get the first offer,” he said. “He’s not a 6-4 guy that’s going to stand in the pocket. He’s a 5-11 guy with a linebacker’s mentality, and that’s hard to find. I’m glad Air Force recognized that and feels he could help their football team.”

Five Wolverines to Play College Football

Trent Bailey has signed to play football for Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.

Maurice "Dougie" Gilliam, Cedric "Ced" Elmore, and Dominique Woodruff have signed to play football with Pikeville College in Pikeville, KY. Pikeville is a Division I member of the NAIA in the Mid-South Conference.

In addition, Ray Bailey has signed to play for NC Tech. NC Tech is a member of the NPAC and 2007 National Champions.

Congratulations guys! Best of luck!
